Martha Ruth Godwin Edwards

Ms. Martha Ruth Edwards, 88, of Linden, TN, passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at Perry County Nursing Home. She was born in Perry County, to the late John William and Mary Elizabeth Kelly Godwin. She graduated from Linden High School and started her teaching career in the late 50’s. She went on to get her Master’s Degree in teaching at Peabody College, currently known as Vanderbilt University's Peabody College of education and human development, and went on to teach at Perry County Schools for over 45 years until her retirement.

She was an avid sports fan, and spent countless years as a statistician for Perry County Schools, keeping score for baseball, football and basketball, including being present and keeping score for all, but 1, of the 6 state Perry County basketball championship teams, and was inducted into the Viking Legacy Club in 2019. She was a huge fan of Coach Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols.

Aside from sports, she had a love for serving others, and spent countless hours in the kitchen baking chess squares and other goodies for the faculty and basketball team members at Perry County High School. She also tutored and helped many students throughout the years. She enjoyed her retirement watching both basketball and football games, and spent much of her time reading, and doing crossword puzzles.   

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Dan Carlton Edwards, and a sister, Mary S. Godwin.

Survivors include her son, Brian (Ginger) Edwards, of Linden; Grandchildren: Hannah (Kevin) Acree, Tyler Davidson, Jackson, Liam, Kieryn and Mila Edwards; Great-Grandchildren: Sophia Acree, of Linden and Ellaina Llewellyn, of Washington, and a host of other family and many, many friends.
