Ray "Doc" Hinson Obituary

Douglas Ray “Doc” Hinson was born on March 7, 1933 in Hohenwald, Tennessee to William John Hinson and Pauline Virginia LaRue Hinson (Weems).  He worked most of his life building homes.  In 1973 Ray started Hinson Construction Company.  He built numerous houses in Decatur and Perry Counties until he retired in 1995.  He was a licensed contractor.  Ray previously served on the Perry County School Board and was a member of Howard’s United Methodist Church where he served as trustee and was a former member of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee.  Ray loved music.  He learned to play the guitar from his stepfather, Dick Weems, the leader of the Weems String Band.  He had a tenor voice and would play and sing with the Weems String Band at numerous fiddle contests and dances in the 40’s and 50’s.  Ray sang with the Linden Circuit Choir from the early 90’s until 2020.  Ray married Jane Rhodes on April 5, 1958.  They had four children together.  Ray was an avid sportsman.  Ray especially enjoyed catfishing and hunting turkeys, quail, ducks, and coons.  Ray held the record for the largest turkey killed in Tennessee for a brief period in the early days of turkey hunting with a 24 pound gobbler.  He continued to breed and raise coon hounds until his death.  Ray was a good storyteller and would entertain with his stories of hunting and fishing.

Ray died peacefully in his sleep in his favorite recliner on Friday, November 26, 2021 after having Thanksgiving dinner with his family.  In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his son, Steve Hinson; his brothers, Joe Hinson and Billy Hinson; his sisters, Eva Marlin Russell, Laura Mae Hinson, Lemma Hinson Russell, and Faye Weems Heath; and his stepbrothers, Aubrey Weems, Dean Weems, Harold Weems, and Ottis Weems.
