Shirley Cloyd Loggins Obituary

Ms. Shirley Elizabeth Cloyd Loggins, 81, of Lobelville passed away peacefully in her sleep at AHC Westwood Senior Care Center in Decaturville.

Shirley was born on May 11, 1940, to Archie and Thelma Lucille (Strickland) Cloyd. Initially a Lab Technician with Evergreen Hospital in Conecuh County, Alabama, and Bill Frist Medical Group in Nashville, Tennessee, she spent much of her professional life as a secretary for Rodgers Construction Company in Nashville, before settling into a life as a homemaker. In May 1959, she married John Redner “Said” Loggins, and during their 54 years of marriage, they raised a daughter, Leigh Ann, of Lobelville, Tennessee

A lifelong sports fan, Shirley enjoyed nothing more than taking in local basketball and baseball, and was a fixture at Vikings home and away games for years. Shirley also never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Braves or the Big Orange – even if all she had was a staticky old radio to give her the play by play. She liked to deploy a subtle wit on occasion – sometimes almost too subtle if you weren’t able to catch her trademark sly glance and half grin. Often unobtrusive, Shirley was nonetheless well-known and respected, especially in Lobelville, where she served as alderman for a time. For many years, in addition to gardens of rose bushes and assorted wildflowers, she maintained a veritable menagerie of everything from housecats to goats. There were virtually no beasts she wouldn’t try to nurture – whether they were astoundingly grouchy little lap dogs, or a pair of wild and destructive grandsons. In her later years, she struggled with the frailties and burdens that time heaps upon all those who’ve seen many decades, but she never lost that sly glance, nor the light in her eyes that would come through whenever she had a chance to talk about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirley has moved on to a better place, but her presence will always be missed by those she’s left behind.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Said, her parents Archie and Thelma Lucille, and her siblings Thomas, James Larry, Bobby, Mary Dean, and Mildred Nell Cloyd. She is survived by her sister Sandra Fields, daughter Leigh Trull and son-in-law Tim Trull, grandsons Adam and Matthew Trull, and great-grandchildren Alexandra, Madison, Christian, and Wyatt.
