Mrs. Vicky Lynn Petty Fortner passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on January 28, 2022. She was born in Waverly, TN on March 17, 1952, to the late Laura Obera O’Guin Petty and James Earl “J.E.” Petty. She was a graduate of Waverly Central High School, Class of 1970, she received her Bachelor’s degree from The University of Tennessee at Martin, and her Master’s degree from Austin Peay State University. She proudly served the children of Perry County Schools for 40 years as a teacher and in administrative roles including Director of School Nutrition. She was a lifetime member of Concord Cumberland Presbyterian Church and served as an elder and the pianist. She loved Jesus, her family, and her many friends and never hesitated to remind us all that “All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by a sister Sara Ann “Boots” Petty Stump.
She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Billy Ray Fortner; her children, Lt. Cmdr. Nathan Coleman (Alison) Fortner, U.S. Navy, of Alexandria, Virginia and Amanda Laurajae Fortner (Michael) Oakes of Nashville; her brother, Donald Gene (Donis) Petty of Burns; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other beloved family and friends. The family is immensely grateful for her close friends who have shown their support during her time of sickness and need.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Vicky’s honor to either the Concord Cemetery Fund at First Federal Bank in Waverly or a scholarship foundation of your choice supporting the higher education of students from Perry County such as The Graham Family Foundation.
